'97 f150 4.6l rear-most passenger side spark plug will not allow my spark plug socket to drop down over it to remove it. inspection mirror and strong light shows that plug is centered and i can see that the hex is not rounded off or anything like that. is there some spark plug socket i don't know about? i've been doing this sort of thing a long time, this stumped my neighbor also, an aviation mechanic. help??!?
Look carefully, I have had several stones fall in the hole and lodge next to the plug. One in particular was white and hard to see. Use a blow gun and clean out the holes.
ive got headers on my fairlane, and, well, taint no easy task gettin a few plugs out. I have to grind down a new socket on a bench grinder to make the walls of the socket thinner, and take out the rubber insert. I havent been able to get one plug out for the last two years. next time im goona haftoo take the header off just to change one plug, try that.

Why not ding the header tube with a ball peen hammer to clear the plug and take a die grinder to the flange to cut it back far enough to clear a socket? If it's running that close, how are you not melting plug boots?
289 with boots that come straight out 3" or so. Ive thought of trying the hammer thing, but the angle ide need is from like under from about the steering box. ill just wait till I get around to taking the header off. Ive tried to find header plugs for small fords, but no luck. looking in wrong place? sorry I hijacked this thread, I should have asked elsewhere, but its not a truck ,so?
I like how this thread never got answered because angus is a moron. No one cares about your piece of **** fairlane and its problems with a 289 were talking about a 4.6 here is that what you have? didn't think so. I'm having the exact same problem and thought that just maybe I would find an answer to a good question but you ruined the post moron.
I'd blow the hole out with an air gun "just in case", then use a deep socket. Once the plug is loose you can ****** it with a magnet if reaching it is a hassle.
yes as i stated 02 use a deep socket. i don't think personal flaming of anyone will get you anywhere on this site bud... it doesn't exactly take a genius to get a sparkplug out of a motor...
in case you didnt notice, in one of my replies, I apologized for hijacking the thread. and apparently you didnt notice also that I did suggested two solutions. what good did you do? flamming will not be tolerated. I was useing my 289 as an example. f
Theres gotta be something in there,,Blow Gun,,light and mirror,,and have at it!
Hijacking the Thread now,,,Angus,,we just did the plugs, intake and so on, on my 68' Torino,,289,,headers,,straight 3" boots or so,,and no problem with any plugs,,is it the flange thats in the way,,,die grinder it,,,, like Superduty mentioned !
And look at that,,someone does care about ones FAIRLANE,,would like to find a 66' or 67' in decent shape someday !
