I'm in the market for a tow rig for my Jeep. The F250 I looked at yesterday made an odd sound after turning it off. A buzzing sound or maybe pressure relief in the engine compartment near the firewall. Is this a fuel injected thing? Any other issues associated with the 460 to keep an eye out for?
Also, what's the better tranny to tow with the 460? Auto or manual? Which tranny is more reliable? Thanks.
For an 89 F250 460 stick with the C-6. Your towing capacity will be higher and the C-6's are virtually bullet-proof.
As far as the "buzzing" sound...I have an 89 F250 and have never heard the buzz...Deen
My '90 F250 w/460 buzzes, and I've noticed a noise after the key is turned off in my friend's 2000 GMC 2500; not quite a buzz, but similar. When I first heard the noise, I suspected a pump or some such apperatus for the fuel return.... Is that likely?
i believe what it is is a fan that cools off the injectors. thats what i suspected when i went lookin at my efi I6, could be somethin else though, just throwing out somethin to look for
Do you have the same noise when you push in the clutch before and while you shut engine off? As the engine is running in neutral and clutch pedal released do you hear a rumble or squealing sound coming from clutch-bellhousing area? If so you could have a number of things to causing the buzzing sound. (A) Throwout bearing. (B) Pilot bearing. (C) Transmission input shaft bearings, are just a few possibilities. My '90 F350 w/460 & 5 speed also has this sort of problem, sounds like a diesel when you shut off engine with clutch released. I will replace clutch, pressure plate, throwout & pilot bearing when time permits. I hope this helps in any way.
