Build questions

High all I am going to build a 460 for my 61 unibody. I have 2 71 era short blocks and a pair of d2ve heads. This is going to be a general purpose engine that will be expect to tow short hauls, sound good and maybe do an occasional burnout. I need a recommendation for cam and intake and carb. I'll be using a C6 tranny and 3.00 gears

go with a weiand stealth intake, theres plenty of flow threw them for a good healthy street motor and there inexpensive. if ya dont plan on nuthin serious like drag racing or the like a cj cam should be all ya need. the cj one is still hydralic while a scj went solid.

get rid of those heads first. they are the worst heads you could use. they are open chamber heads that even in stock form were notorious for detonation. add any power adders and it only gets worse.

try to either find the early heads (DOVE, C8 or C9VE) or even the latter heads the D3VE are way better than those heads you have now.

don't use those heads!!!!!

OK I'll find different heads. What about a carb and distributor. I have an Edelbrock 600cfm (model 1406 IIRR)on the 302 I'm currently running and like it. I can find holleys cheaper and have more experience tuning them but really like the less need for tinkering of the Edelbrock. What is your guy's opinion of the HEI distributors for these engines. Appearence doesn't bother me.

ya get some other heads,if you dont wana run 93 octaine all the time use the d3 casting.i just use a plain jane dura spark set up in my 71 with a later model coil(the square ones from the 90"s) works good even has enuff to lite the 200hp shot of N20 i give it once and a while. why not there cheap and reliable. i would also bump up to a 750cfm carb,im like you love my holley but just dont like messin with them all the time, but the holley will beat the edelbrock on the dyno any time.

i agree with Wizard.

the factory Duraspark with either the factory coil or better yet an aftermarket coil is more than adequate for you application. reliable, cheap and lots of them out there (the 351C&M/400 distributor is the same as the 460 distributor).

go with a 750 minimum size. the 600 is barely adequate on a 351 let alone a healthy 460. your choice of Holley or Edelbrock/Carter. on the street the difference in hp would be hardly noticeable between the Holley and Edelbrock.

good luck
Mike

Thanks again for the input. I'm more concerned with fuel economy. Shooting for around 10 mpg driving politely. Thats what my 302 gets around town and 13 hwy staying under 70. I'm going bigger because I have to rebuild the 302 anyway and it dosen't have the power to do more than make alot of noise. I was embarrassed when I went to pull my Ranchero out of the weeds when I bought it and my truck struggled to do it. Rich

Rich if you need a dur-a-spark II I have the whole system sitting on my shelf in the garage. The only think it needs is the small wire clip that I lost flipping the vacuum advance plate.

I run the comp 270 cam now with a bone stock valvetrain on D3VE heads and it works great. has a slightly rough idle below 1000 RPM and runs great. I also run the eddie 750 carb and performer intake. Its a great package. Motor is other wise stock with a .30 over bore with stock cast pistons, comp 270 cam/lifters, eddie carb and intake with headdman headders.

I run an NP435 with 3.50-1 gears and 38" TSls and I can roast them on pavement. That cam and induction system builds good power off idle to about 5500 RPM and will free spin to 6k.

If you decide to get a new distributor, consider our custom curved Duraspark Distributor built with our new Full Length Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushing. The full length bushing improves timing stability and spark scatter. If stock appearance is not an issue, take a look at our one piece D.U.I. Distributor. Whether you choose the Duraspark or the D.U.I., we curve each on a distributor machine based on your engine combination. Please see them at:

http://www.performancedistributors.com/forddistributor.htm

Also, there is now an excellent installation article on the D.U.I. Distributor on the Ford-Trucks.com site at:
