I've been around FTE for awhile, but this is my first post in the Explorer section. I've got to admit that I haven't read much here, either. We were looking for an Expedition, but found this Explorer we liked alot, so here we are.
It's an '06 Eddie Bauer 4x4. It has 38K miles on it, and it's a really sweet ride, but the rear end seems to be awfully bouncy. It seems awfully early to be worn shocks/struts, but I s'pose it's possible - or is it just the nature of these things with the IRS? It does have the 4.6L, and a heavy looking receiver hitch - were they offered with a tow package that would make the rear suspension noticeably stiffer?
Any input from anyone with any experience and/or ideas with this would be appreciated.
well, i have a 2002 EXP 4 x 4 with 100k miles. suspension is excellent. smooth as a car, much better than our 96. original shocks and springs.... im guessing most guys fall in the same area i do and cant relate to the problem you describe?
I totally destroyed a pair of shocks towing an improperly loaded and way to heavy trailer. If all else checks out good in the rear suspension consider some new rear shocks and hopefully that is it.
Thanks for your replies. Steve, I guess that means something prob'ly is wrong, if no one else can relate. I'm going to try to get it on a lift and get a good look at the rear suspension tomorrow. Hopefully, it is just shocks.
Finally got new rear struts, and it's 100% better now. The old ones were completely shot. I should've known that was the problem, but it just didn't make sense to me at the mileage. Probably like MCDT said, improper loading or something like that.
The dealership quoted me $400 (supposedly cost of the struts only), to "help me out" since they sold it that way, but a friendly local tire/alignment shop did it for $300 (parts and labor), and got the struts from the same Ford dealer (though it did take awhile). Go figure...

I am a but suprised that the shocks worn out so soon but I am glad that they fixed the problem. They should have been more flexible because of the mileage. Its a shame that Ford gets so greedy at the expense of customer loyalty that is why I get the longest extended warranties because at their outrageous prices it pays for itself soon.
