Supercab or Supercrew

Hey fellas,
I think after 12 years I'm finally going to sell my 95 f-150 supercab and upgrade to a 01-03 low mile 2wd v8 model. I'm torn between the supercab and supercrew. I have always had supercab short boxes. However, I have a 5yr old and 6yr old kids, and eventually the supercab will be too tight. My question is primarily how handy that 5.5 foot box REALLY is. I've always been able to move drywall/plywood/siding ( and I do this far more than the average homeowner) without an issue. How is doing this sort of thing with the 5.5 foot box? Any opinions would help.

Thanks,

I thought about getting a super crew for the same reason as you (2 boys) and I decided to get a super cab with an 8' bed. The 5.5' bed is real small, even with the tailgate down a sheet of plywood hangs a foot out of the truck. You dont realize how small the bed is until you start filling it, I have a cooler that I use for fishing that would take up about 1/3 of a 5.5' bed. Personally I think the Super Crew with the 5.5' bed is nothing more than a lifted Crown Vic with the trunk lid ripped off.

My decision process boiled down to statement #1 or statement #2

1. I need my truck to carry people and sometimes I fill it with "stuff" = Supercrew

2. I need my truck to carry "stuff" and sometimes I carry people = Supercab

I have a 2001 Supercrew and love it. Me and the wife with four kids have gone on many of vacation in it. I have the low profile camper top which is great for all our stuff. I have a 10 foot trailer that I use to carry the big stuff.

I've owned both, and prefer the Supercrew.

If it was me i would get a extended cab long bed. I like having a long bed, but could also benifet from a ex. cab.
With you carrying drywall and stuff, a super crews bed would be just too small.

i had a 89 F250 supercab with 8 ft bed. it would haul anything smaller than the city of Chicago. I traded it for a 2001 Supercab so i could haul 4 adults in comfort. I also like the looks. I go to the lumber yard probably once every 3 weeks. I have haaled a dozen sheets of plywood or drywall several times. So it overhangs the bed a foot, who cares. I have a receiver hitch on the back and made an extension for it with a raised bar the height of the bed floor. It sets about 18 inches behind the tail gate when down. I have hauled 10 and 12 ft 2 x 6 with this setup. Also hauled a 12 foot long, 24 inch diameter steel culvert for the farm. I have a car trailer also for bigger things, but the truck handles most of what i do for the past 2.5 years. I love it.

i think its silly that ford offered a SuperCrew (implying it would be hauling a crew) with no bed to work out of! Luckily Ford got some brains in what, 2005 or 06, for the Screw with the 6.5 foot bed. If you're wanting a crew cab with a box, you might want to look at a F250 superduty with the crewcab and 6' box or 8' box. The V10 or V8 mpg compared to the F150 V8 5.4L isn't too much different.

Yea thats a tought one supercrew is good for hauling people but then the bed aint the biggest so then your screwed might consider a little cheap utility trailer then otherwise supercab is the way to go but yeah im sure your kids will outgrow it but whadd ya do

unless you want an 04-08 they offer Supercrew with 6.5 ft bed

I have a 2001 XLT Super Crew. I also have a 30" toolbox, across the bed. I work commercial construction, and have been re-modeling my house. The short bed is a pain, but NOT as big a pain as it is with the tool box, that I have.

BUT, I don't haul stuff everyday either.

I have a 1998 Super Cab. It hauls my family of 4 (wife, 17 YO son, 14 YO daughter) just fine. They actually prefer riding in it over my wifes 99 'Stang ..... more room they say. The 3rd door, or 4th door in the 99-up's, make these Super Cabs much more family-friendly than your 95 Super Cab. I sold my 95 Super Cab to buy this later style, much happier now!

I've gotta chime in here as well. I had an 06 Supercab, and the lease was up in dec 07, buyout was 21k.....that wasn't happening!! I was looking for a used 01-04 supercab.....but then I thought on how much I use the bed of the truck......Yea I would love to have an 8ft bed, who wouldn't. But I haul the wife and our 4yr old, and me making the choice of a Supercrew, was a very good one. The way I see it, if I need a 6.5ft bed, I'll just leave the tailgate down. I can see what guys mean about adding a toolbox to the bed.THAT would defintely shorten it up. I hope we all help you in your decision.
Good Luck
Rich
