Well for hauling longer things, the Supercrews had the optional bed extender the would let you secure items that reach back to the end of the tailgate when it is down.

1. I need my truck to carry people and sometimes I fill it with "stuff" = Supercrew
2. I need my truck to carry "stuff" and sometimes I carry people = Supercab
Personally, I am usually in category 1...but I can fit a riding lawnmower in the bed of mine with the tailgate shut (I had the let air out of the back tires, but it worked) I bought mine in 05 as an 05...no "long bed" supercrews then...
