Installed Lower Ball Joint Zerk, How Do Upper?

From a previous post here I decided to drill, tap and install zerk grease fittings on the ball joints. The lowers were easy.

But I could not drill the upper joint. I even tried a long bit, but it was at too much of an angle due to interference from the lower ball joint area.

I have a 99 2-wheel drive F350.

Has anyone had success drilling into the upper ball joint to install a grease fitting?

Nope, by the time you get everything apart to do it, might as well replace them with the Moog greasables and be done with it.

yes I drilled and tapped my uppers while I had everything apart to replace the knuckle seals and axle dust seals,I drilled mine with my 1/4" drill it's very small and compact,or an angle drill should work as well, since you done the lowers I won't get into bit sizes and so on,but I will say that I tried a 90deg. fitting first and it hit the universal on my axles so I had to switch them out for real short straight fittings they clear the axles by plenty but it is tough to get on them for regreasing with the axles in there.you have a 2 wheel drive so clearance won't be an issue for you.

I used an air drill with a short drill bit. The bit is only 2'' long.

ford390gashog: Do you have a 2-wheel drive superduty? Were you able to drill straight in or did you have to drill at an angle?

From the other replies I am guessing that the 4x4 upper balljoint is more accessible than the 4x2.

My 90-deg drill (nor the 90-deg drill attachment for my regular drill) would not fit into the knuckle.

I will have to look at my air drill to see if it will fit.
