Ive had my truck for about a year now and have not gotten around to fixing the 4X4. It was not working when i got it and ive been stuck several times so i need to do somthing about it. I have the dash selector and when i turn it from 4X2 to 4X4 high nothing happens and when i put it in 4X4 Low also nothing happens. I can get out and manually lock in the hubs and the driveshaft will spin but the wheels wont. I plugged my buddys swich into my truck and that didnt do anything. Im stumped on this one. Any ideas?
Did you check the fuse for it? If that was fine, then I'd check out the connector and harness at the actuator down on the transfer case and make sure the terminals inside aren't corroded up. It could be something as simple as that.
It affected the electric shifter, the 4x4 light wouldn't even come on, the manual hubs worked fine and would spin the drive shaft when engaged but since the shift pump was junk no power was being put to the wheels.
Did you check this junkie, airlines that go to the front hubs? There's your A/C go to defroster? If so, the hoses that go to your hubs are probably rotted and no good. That would be a good place to look.
If you have stock hubs you have automatic hubs. Ford didn't make a Super Duty with an electronic transfer case and manual hubs. The hubs should have AUTOMATIC and LOCK on them.
2 things need to happen when you turn your switch to 4H or 4L. First, the hubs need to lock. To test this, start the truck and put it in 4H (while in park). Go to either front wheel, reach around it and try to turn the axle behind the wheel. If you can turn this, your hubs did not lock automatically. If you cannot turn the axle, the hubs are locked. Now, turn the switch to 2H and try the test again. Did the hubs unlock? If either test failed, you need to fix it. You probably need new hubs, maybe a new vacuum control servo. A lot of guys ditch the automatic hubs and get aftermarket manual hubs.
OK, now the second thing that has to happen is an electric motor needs to shift your transfer case. If you didn't get a light this probably didn't happen. If the fuses are all good you need to replace the transfer case shift motor.
I know about the shift motor that was my original idea. I've got no light, the fuses are all good, and when i turn the switch into 4H i can freely spin the front drive shaft.
The switch is fine, that was the first thing i checked. when i start the car the 4x4 light comes on briefly then goes off. i don't know if that matters tho.
when you first turn it on the cluster does a light check... that means the light is working, the transfer case is not - at least thats my trouble shooting guess... maybe get down there and check the connections to the 4wd motor / transfer case... unplug um and plug them backl in?
this is just stuff i would try - i dont know if its right or not
