Well I finaly broke the 302 I bought to rebuild and stick in my 94 F150. The motor has a set of D80E heads, Are these heads any good for a mild cam and MAF setup on my truck?
D8 translates the 1978... those are some of the worst heads you could get, hugh combustion chambers and small valves.. not good. Find some E7TE or GT40/Explorer heads.
WOW that kinda hurt man.... Nah thanks for the heads up though. I may run them for now because they have been worked and ready to go or I may pick up different set before putting the motor in, I havent decided yet. How much torque would I loose by running these instead of a set of E7TE's if I was running 40 over flat tops, 218 int 228 ext @ 50 thousands duration with .471/.471 lift cam, headers and everything else stock. This is not a roller block so I am running a flat tappet cam. Do yall think this is too much cam for a MAF set up? The next size down cam I have picked out is 204 int 214 ext @ 50 thousands duration with .488/.472 lift , would this be a better cam?
Both cams will work with a MAF setup, and the motor should make respectable power above 3000rpm. You could select pistons to bump the compression up into the 9-10:1 range, with stock pistons the 69cc chambers on these heads will put CR down in the low 8:1 range, and that will hurt TQ. But as stated these heads don't flow that well.. none of the stock casting are super great.. and even ported these heads probably won't top 275-300hp. Just remember, if you do install high compression pistons now you'll end up with much higher CR if you ever upgrade the heads, most of the better casting out there use 58 and 64cc chambers, and this will put the motor into the premium fuel only range.
