Need a new vacuum

I have an old Electrolux canister that works decent, just needs a new hose, new power brush, and lets a fair amount of dust through. I am kinda leaning towards a new lower end bagless vacuum, but have heard mixed reports on them.
I have been looking at the Hoover and Eureka models at wally world, but don't know how good they really are, especially that turbine powered "power paw" attachment.
Anybody have these and like them, or recommend a decent lower price brand?

I bought a low end hoover bagless once. It sucked great, but it was a god awful mess to empty the dirt and clean the filter. I eventually dumped it and bought a dirt devil with bags.

I have always been a "kenmore" cannister style user. They work well and last a long time. Sears has been doing a good business with those style vacs for a very long time, that must be a good sign. We aren't clean freaks though, as long as there aren't any visible crumbs, lint, or other visible debris..we are happy.

The AP-100 is one of the best ever built

DON'T go bagless.. get a vacuum that uses bags.

Those Hypogenic things are crap.

I bought a new Hoover Upright (I was getting tired bending over all the time) 3 years ago and it works great.

Our Hoover Fusion is awesome. It picks up a ton of crap, is a snap to clean out the canister, and was only like 130 bucks or less.

My mom got a Oreck a few years ago. This past year she got sick so I go over and do some housework for her. That is one sweet vaccum. Very light, Very powerful, and it lays almost flat to get under coffee tables and such.

A couple of years ago I bought a new lower-end Bissell bagless, for around $150. It's got awsome suck to it but it's a bit if a PITA to clean, and now it makes the most gawd-awful racket when it's running (extemely loud when, like a jet on take-off) that I hate to even use it. The cat goes running for cover when I plug it in. So I'd hate to recommend a Bissell at this point. I've looked at those Dyson things, but at around 500 bills, they're definitely not lower-end...

We have 2 dogs who shed, so we went for the Dyson " Animal " model. What a vacuum it is! Does the best job of any unit I have ever seen; cost is about $500, but well worth it.

I bought a Fantom bagless at KMart 10 years ago. It put my Mom's KIRBY to shame! It's still going strong!

I priced those things!!! They seem very basic, they are small and light.
Here is the problem..they cost 700 clams and up.

I saw an old Electrolux canister on the free section of craigs list (MPLS) today. Had to check where you were from to see if it was you giving it away.

Heh, I don't think I will give this one away, it does still work, and I think it's older than me.
My wife's other complaint on this one is that the bag does not have that much capacity, so it has to be changed out frequently. That's one of the reasons I was thinking bagless.

My daughter has a one person maid business, and she suggested that we try the cheapest Bissel.

Got one, and it worked great. It did blow out one of the bearings on the brush after a year, but we just bought another one.

Reasoning was that it was only about $40. It's bagless, but easy to clean. Does have 3 or 4 filters ( no HEPAs), but they're easy to do also.

We always have a few animals about (wife's fault). We're currently at 5 cats, one of them a nice hairy Persian. Also, I'm in and out all of the time, occasionally dragging in a bit of dirt.

Anyway, most other vacs tend to lose effectiveness in a couple of years with all of the animal hair. Bissel probably would have too, but at $40, I can replace them when they start to fail. We'll see if this next one has a brush issue.

I've read about the Dyson, but that's 12.5 Bissels. I'd have to be awfully sure.

I'll second the Oreck, there was one left in the closet when I moved in here. It barley worked at first, I dismantled it and removed a stuck pill container and a sock, now it works perfect. Its got some power, sounds like a jet engine when its running, it'll suck up whatever I run over.

The bags are a little pricey, but I'm a cheapass so I dump and reuse them.

No need to break the bank for the Oreck. Our base model works just fine and it picks up better than any Hoover or Eureka we ever had. It's a deceptive little unit. It seems like something this light and simple wouldn't work this well, but it picks up everything, and brushes the carpet just fine.

Base model is 300 bucks, and the payments can be spread out over 10 months.
