Does anyone know what the auto tranny would be in a 2003 4.0L Exploder? This thing seems to shudder at first when you put it into gear, then it seems fine. Could the converter be loose? If so, then how do I check it? Do I have to pull the starter because Ford is too stupid to put in an inspection cover?
a 2002 should be a 5 speed automatic, 5R55E. look at the above post to see how the check the fluid level from the drain pplug.-- this is a solenoid controlled, electronic transmission. it is very important to change the oil every 30k miles and put in a new filter. crud in the oil will plug the valves and "stick" the shift spools. changing the oil would be a good idea first.
Referencing Steve "the posting guru" link....since my post in that thread after having my tranny serviced I drove it over the hump to Pullman a distance of 300 miles. The tranny shifted and operated perfectly. Before that I had problems with shuddering as if running over a cattle guard. I also had the plug wires replaced due to a bad wire. I heard that this can cause shuddering too. After the plug wires changed out and the tranny serviced I am pleased and comfortable now after leaving the Explorer with my kid at college.
