Are 6.9s worth more than 7.3s?

I was browsing through the local classifies at trucks for sale, and I noticed the older 6.9 powered trucks are listed for higher prices than the 7.3 powered trucks (IDIs). Some are the same price but still, I would expect the older 6.9s to sell for less. A few years ago it was the opposite, so what gives, it the secret out? some 6.9s were $8000!

Just wondering what the rest of you are seeing, my observation is not exactly scientific.

For what it's worth, I rarely see 6.9's in the paper here. Hell, I rarely see 7.3's either, but the last time I saw a 6.9 in the paper, there were two- An F250 that said it didn't run, and another F250 that said it needed a lot of body work. Both were in the $1200 range.

Maybe people think the older trucks are worth more?

I've seen a '97 F350 with a 460 listed here for $10,000...

Asking and getting are two different things.I've seen some older diesels in nice condition sell for around $1000 and some avererage to poor condition trucks with an asking price of a $2,000 - $3,000 for sale for a long time.Stuff is only worth what someone is will to pay for it.

When I first started looking for a diesel I made an offer of $800 for a 93 F250 4x2 with a bad e4od trans that was in poor condition.
Thankfully the owner told me the motor was worth $1000 and declined my offer.
After reading thru this forum and searching online I found a southern 91 f250 4x2 5speed turbo extended cab for $1300 in great condition but it sold before I got there.

Finally bought a 93 f350 4x4 with a Dana 60 front axle and a bad 5-speed in excellent condition for $1500.

Very happy the other trucks didn't work out as because what I bought was exactly what I wanted/needed but thought was out of my budget.
Try looking on Craigslist in cities around yours, it is a good way to figure out what stuff is actually selling for.Good deals disappear over priced stuff stays listed till it expires.

I was recenlty searching this are for the F250/F350 IDIs and I found very few 7.3L IDI. I think maybe 10:1 ratio A lot of the 6.9L were in various states of disrepair. Photos of them sitting out on the back of lots or in fields with grass growing up around them. Most of the ads said engine runs good!... but the bodies and interiors rough but not bad. They were in the $1-2K range. The ones that seemed to be actively used were in the $2-4K range. Then there were the occaisional ones which had loving owners with new upolstery and paint and well maintained and upgraded for $7k or more. An interesting note to me was that the presence of a turbo didn't seem to make much difference in the selling price. I found one that I think I will go and get for $700, it is a 1985 F250 super cab 4x4 C6 tranny and ATS 088 turbo (with pyrometer)... the C6 is the only negative it has for me. They found some water in the oil so it may have a headgasket or oil cooler leak... unfortunately it is a couple hours away from where I live.

I know junkers can be found for real cheap sometimes, what I'm noticing here is the asking price of running, usable diesels are showing a higher cost for the older 6.9s. Like you mentioned, I also saw that the price is not affected much with a turbo added.

When I was looking for my diesel, I had al but given up on finding a good used 6.9, because they were all "well used", and none of them were well priced. One guy wanted $4500 (firm) for a 4x4 that had strait water in the engine, the overflow tank was red! Although back then, the 7.3s were still priced higher than the 6.9 powered trucks.

I've been in contact with the same guy. The body does not look bad, except for a pretty large dent that runs bottom to top in front of the right, rear, tail light. I forgot to ask about the milage on the truck.

I had to laugh when he sent me a few pics. It looks just like my truck, same color (mine has no dents though) but I've been looking for a good extended cab. I don't care about the motor. It would be around a 700 mile trip, one way for me to get. Worth it if I can find the right truck.

I found an '84 F-250 locally that has the 6.9L in it. I went to look at it today and the body is in rough shape but the engine runs good. The guy wants around $500 for the complete truck but I would have to tow it because I'm pretty sure it will not go down the road. Do you guys think it would be worth picking it up for say $400-$500 dollars for the engine and drivetrain? The frame doesn't look that great either. Would anyone be interested in parts off of it if I were to pick it up? I need an engine for my truck beacuse I siezed mine up. I looked into rebuilding it and couldn't believe the cost of a rebuild kit for the 6.9L engines!!!! Anywhere from $900-$1300 and then another $500 for machining. Anyone know where to get rebuilds cheaper?

I bought a 85 F-350 last winter-6.9, 4sp T-19, 2wd Dually, cab and chassis only, good frame, little rust, needs work, was sitting for a year, and has been sitting for another year since i bought it (too wrapped up in my '65). but i went and checked it out, the guy charged the batteries and cranked it right over, started a little tough but runs good. Paid 500 for it. originally bought it to transplant the drivetrain into my '65 f350, but came up short of time and didn't do the swap...instead rebuilt my orig. 352.

A good running 6.9 engine is going for $1000 and up, were I am, $2500 if its from a wrecker. If the engine is good, I'd say its worth the $500. For cheaper rebuilds, it really depends on what you need, I'm probably headed for $2000 maybe more, but the engine service life is longer than with a diesel than most gassers, so if you plan on keeping it, it will pay off, eventually. If all you get is a ring and bearing kit, the rebuild will cost less.
