yeah mine i got about 9mpg as stated i do have a very heavy foot and i did alot of hiway driving at 85-95mph or so plus idiling with it at work waiting in the am and warming it up n such, i always figured about 9-10mpgs mixed, sold/traded it for my mazda and cash and that was the worst/best thing ive done.....
Stewart, if it makes you feel any better I put 8k miles on it the first year I had it. That's an average of a whopping 1300+/- miles per year since then.

i think 16-18 mpg is very accurate. just got back from a 250 mile trip earlier this week then drove to work in atlanta traffic 2 days and ran a few trips around town total of 347 miles on 20.03 gal of gas 17.32 mpg wich isnt bad for city highway miles at 75 mph on the highway. going on a 400 mile trip tomarrow towing a 5 x 9 trailer with a 600 lb motorcycle on the way back will get an accurate number doing that

Thank you,
It's nice to talk to someone who's not afraid to put some miles on these things. I know I can't afford to drop that much money on a vehicle and not drive it. Besides, is there a better looking daily driver out there?
I live out in the sticks, so 16-18 MPG is for my normal mix of small town (40%)/highway driving (60%). On the interstate, driving the speed limit, and using cruise you can bump on 20 MPG, so if you only drove in a city, I’d guess somewhere around 12 –14 MPG would be realistic.
Thank you. Well it's finally come down to the decision. a '00 lightning with 96000 miles on it for $13,000 vs a '00 Ext Cab Short bed Super duty(Lariet automatic with a 7.3; 4wd of course) 196000 miles on that old bird for $10,500. Both trucks are extremely nice. I just can't bring myself to make the choice. My only problem with the lightning is its inability to handle the tongue weight of a bass boat on a single axle trailer(I've heard horror stories about extremely soft springs in the rear and also something about the engine getting overheated under load). Then there's always the dreaded fear of having your 2wd backed down the boat ramp and you start to spin instead of moving back up the boat ramp.

That's happened before though..... The fix last time was just to stand on it until it caught traction. I think that fix would be a little more reactive with a lightning, don't you think?

I've towed a fully loaded U-Haul trailer from Western Montana to South Carolina in July and never noticed any overheating.
It wouldn't be more reactive cause a 7.3 super duty wouldn't be backed down my a boat ramp in the first place :P. The torque of those 7.3's was wonderful. The lightening seems better shape, but i think you might be overpaying a lil on that 00. There's some nice 03 F-250 King Ranch diesel crew cabs on my ford lot for only 17g. So 10g for something that old seems a little pricey.
