Heater Core

Slight problem, after taking out the old core, the core I picked up did not fit, wrong one. Took some pics with a camera and went back to the parts store, ordered what looked like the right one. Picked it up, brought it home, pulled out the old core (2nd time) to replace and noticed when I went to put it in that the two pipes on the top come out and make a left 90 degree turn vice coming straight out thru the firewall (couldn't tell from the parts computer pick when I ordered). Put the old core back in (2nd time) and back to the store to return the 2nd core. After looking at model years 83-87 we couldn't find the right one. After searching and looking the parts guy said maybe the A/C was a "dealer" installed system when the truck was bought and the heater core is a dealer install. I purchased the truck up in Washington State from the original owner back in 91. Does this sound possible? Or is it just an aftermarket parts problem??

I'm stopping at the dealership on the way home tonight, I hope I can find the right one.
Good part so far is I getting really good at swapping out heater cores -- I think I could do it in less than 15 minutes!!

OK, they looked different, but did either of the replacement heater cores physically fit???

It might help if you were to post that picture you took, some one here may be able to identify if it is stock or some sort of mod part.

it would probably be a good idea to take the core in with you to compare, not a picture.

The first one did not physically fit, the second did physically fit but the tubes made a left 90 degree turn which meant the tubes would not go thru the firewall. I did have dimensions as well as the pictures when I went back and that parts store had pictures of the heater core replacements, none of which matched. I stopped at the dealer on the way home last night and according to their supply system it is no longer carried by the dealer. He did give me a motorcraft part number E3TZ-18476-G, I'll see if I can find one on the web to order. I'll also check with NAPA in town.

I can't download the picture on this computer, I'll have to do that at home later today.

PLC7.3, thanks for the NAPA info. I checked the website online and sure enough they have the correct core, easy to tell from the photo. Thanks for the help. Called my local NAPA Parts Store and they have it in stock -- should have it in tonight.
