I have a start retard box (MSD) so I can't time by "hot cranking method", of course I can always advance for performance and back off at pinging. The problem with that is its hard to hear pinging though with big exhaust pipes and tires. I have new timing light coming - should be here by Saturday. If that doesn't solve problem I'll replace Mallory dist with a MSD unit.
Maybe I'll get the MSD Knock alert just for a piece of mind. It's not too expensive and could save my engine in the end. Any one using one?
Nice 460 pix in your gallery. I guess the nickel plating on my L&L headers must be working - they're not rusting like yours are...but I like your pix. Don't forget to look at Harrison's motorvation.....I've got his 460 painted a brighter blue....
I just got the MSD timing light today. Hooked it up and I've got rock solid timing marks.
I also recieved the MSD spark knock indicator. Cost $149 from Summit. If you want to install one, make sure you also order the high temp wire loom if your running headers. The sensor screws into the water drain plug next to the starter. The wire runs back to display in cab. Since the headers are right next to starter/sensor the wire needs to be protected. I got the 500 deg/2000 deg radiant heat wire loom (3 ft for $29). This weekend I will finish installation and begin tuning.
Thanks for the compliment. I should have sanded them down and used a high temp paint before I installed them, but I didn't. I would have liked a good coated pair, but my wallet said no. Besides, I got a heck of a deal on the Dynomax ones. A buddy of mone owns a speed shop and someone had ordered them and didn't pick them up, so I got a set of $129 headers for $69. The price was right so I went for it. I was going to leave the manifolds on it until this deal came along.
