4X4 Problem

I'm asking this for a friend of mine, he has a 96 F250 4X4. When he goes to to put it in 4 wheel drive it will not engage. He said that everything up to the hubs is working but it's like they won't lock in. Any ideas? Thanks.

Are they auto hubs? Sounds like the hubs are stuck. Yoiu may be able to tap on them but they probably need to be removed and inspected/cleaned/repaired.

Yes, sorry I forgot to put that they are auto hubs.

clean them up, grease them, or replace with manual hubs.

I used to have auto hubs and fought them constantly (e.g. getting stuck, disengaging when i need them most). I said no more and put on a set of Warn manual hubs and never had a problem since. Ditch the auto hubs!
