C8VE-E Heads any info would help

I was just given a rebuilt set of C8VE-E heads. Can anyone tell me anything about them? CC, Valve size, rockers. I am as dumb as a box of rock when it comes to part/casting numbers.

Are these good heads to install on a 77 460?

Valves:2.09" Intake,1.65"exhaust.
Portsizes:2.18"x1.87"intake,1.99"x1.30" exhaust

I currently have a set of these on my mud truck, and they work well. They would be a noticable improvement over the 77 heads as they have the smaller 73cc combustion chambers.

Those heads have a stud mounted rail rocker arm that's not interchangable with your '77 pedestal rocker arms. Chamber size should be 75-78cc.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 19-Sep-02 AT 09:11 PM (EST)]Ok, now that I have the low-down on the heads here is another question. These heads have screw in studs. I do not want to use the rail rockers. Is there a good rocker arm I can use without machining the head? I would like to bolt-on and go if possible.

Sounds like they were modified to use roller rockers on them.

These heads came from the factory with "positive stop" screw in rocker studs. These need to be changed out for "non positive stop" studs (just buy studs advertised for big Chevy engines). Now you need pushrod guide plates from Comp Cams or Ford Performance. Now, get in touch with Harland Sharp and order roller rockers for the early Ford heads (you'll actually get a Pontiac part#) because the standard BB Ford rockers wont work. Or if you dont mind a slightly smaller rocker ratio, any BBC rocker will work. Be sure to tap out the stud threads in the head before installing. You'll need to check the pushrod length and order hardened pushrods.

Why don't you want to use the rail rockers? Your '77 is a low compression engine, 8.0:1, and will probably never see much more than 4500-5000rpm, even with a cam. CJs ran the rail rockers to 5800rpms without problems.

Just put a set of $25 Crane or other lock nuts on the studs and you'll be able to adjust lifter pre-load without spending a bunch of money.

georgedavila - I plan to run upto a max 5500rpm. I'll be running approx 10:1 compression. I have read several places that the Rail Rockers were trash? I would very much like to use them since I already have them and are in very good shape IF they are reliable.

Any thought as to the reliabliablity of rail rocker upto 5500rpm? My cam lift is just short of .500

If you're going to spin it to 5500rpm, then I'd definately recommend guideplates and hardened pushrods. I believe Crane makes a kit that will allow you to install the guideplates without machining the pedestals to achieve correct valve train geometry. As mentioned, CJs run rail rockers and a lot of people run them without problems at 5500rpm. I was suggesting that you run them to save the $200+ cost of roller rockers.
