hey guess i just picked up a 79 250 4x4 complete chassie with motor.i was told the motor was a 460 marine engine but im not sure it is even a 460..1st off i cant find any casting numbers on the out side of the head but 45 on each side near the bottom corner.inside i found the #5l22and the #53197cast in a circle.the # under the starter are D9TE-AB.on the intake are the # OSTE-942??A and 3E23.please help i am not sure what i even have bought!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:-staun
The D9TE-AB block is a 79 460 truck block, likely the stock engine that came with the truck. I dont know where the marine came from. The casting number for the heads is under the bottom rail of the valve covers. Take the valve covers off and you'll most likely find D3VE-A2A castings, maybe D8VE.
If you remove the valve covers, note the size of the valve stems. If they are normal valves, it is stock. If they are really fat, they may be sodium filled valves used in marine engines. These are really good valves, and run cool so they rarely burn. Expensive too.
If this is a marine'd 460 it will have either stainless or brass freeze plugs the engine may even have stainless bolts attaching some parts. It would be pretty rare someone would have put a marine'd 460 into the truck you have.

The 460 was not put into a 4x4 until 1983, not saying somebody else didn't swap one in though.
No need to take off the valve covers the casting number is between the inside two spark plugs.:-)
hey thanks for the insight...i took the valve covers off cleaned up inside and out on the head and still cant find any # other than 5L22.the guy i bought it from told me the heads were marine heads if they even exist i dont know!
2 things. Sodium valves were not used in 385 series engines as they all have 11/32" valve stems. Also, I guess someone forgot to tell Ford they put a 460 in the '79 F-250 $x$ I bought new. Mmmmmmmm strange.
