I've got a 460 in my 78 f-250 that is burning a good bit of oil and is need of a rebuild. I had the heads redone on it about 6 months ago and everything on them is new. When i rebuild i want to put a cam in it. The cam must have a noticeable idle (the rougher the better) and good power between 1500-5000 rpm's. I'm was wondering if anyone knows of something that meets those standards. There are no restrictions except for i don't want the cam so big that it messes up my all but new heads. thanks in advance
Ive got a comp cams 4x4 extreme 262h. Its a little rough in the idle enough you know its there. I think the next cam up in this series would be good aswell. These 4x4 extreme cams make great low end torque. But which ever you choose run the valve springs they tell you with the cam or at least a similar spring that can take the lift. I just bought an engine with a 513/518 lift cam and most of the pushrods were bent from coil bind.
Good Luck Andy
I have severe lifter noise after warm-up. I bought all my parts for re-build through a racing engine rebuilder, and I did what he asked and now I have this problem. I started with shorter push-rods, and that didn't do it. What may I have done wrong? (1977 460 w/dove-c heads, currently 8.350" pushrods)
Currently I have clevite flat-tappet lifters with roller rockers. I have gone as far as a 3/4 turn after 0-lash for adjustment. I almost want to think I have a geomatry problem. etc. too long/too short pushrods
What brand an ratio are your rockers. I ran 8.350's for years on a set of DOVE's with 1.7 Crane Energizer rockers without problems. I did machine the stud boss, took .250 off. Have you checked you pushrod length? Where is the roller running on the valve stem? Comp cams has a good article on thier website about correct pushrod length.
I have to be honest, I realy am not sure, but if it was mine I don't think I would take it much over 6,000 rpms for any lengthy amount of time in stock condition. Sorry I don't know for sure
