OK, I know that I have done this before, but on my 76 460, I can't remove the distributor! I have the retainer removed and have even turned the engine over, but I can't even get it to turn. Any suggestions other than a 10lb. hammer?
Sounds like the oil pump shaft is bound. Try to turn the motor backwards by hand. You should only need to turn it an 1/8 of a crank turn to get it out.
If you look into the history you will find a good thread on this subject. Basically you need to soak the distributor with penetrating oil for a couple of days. You also will have to work it with a large wrench back and forth, even if it just a wiggle. You can alto try hammering it with a brass drift to break it free. Be patient, it will come loose.

Heh heh heh.....I tought my distributor who was boss, yes I did. I jerked the oil pan off, ripped off the oil pump and rammed a long Craftsman 3/8" exension up in that hole I did and proceeded to pound the dayights out of the bottom of the distributor with a 12 pound sledge hammer. (Wasn't a scene I would suggest your young kids to witness.....)
Yessireebob --- out it came like a wet cat straight out of the creek! (I was going to replace it anyway with a Mallory unit ).
Heck, I'd probably recommend even my crowbar prying method before that...
