using a thread chaser

i bought a thread chaser to clean up the spark plug threads on my 352 engine. my plugs will not seat properly and air blows around them. they do not use gaskets. i was advised to purchase a thread chaser. to clean the threads.
im afraid of metal shavings and grit falling down into the cylinders, i dont want the cylinders to become scored from metal and grit that will fall down into the area .is there a procedure to follow? jeff

Yes Jeff, there is something to use. First of all, the thread chaser is fluted, reliefs cut down the sides across the threads, right??? If so, fill them full with bearing grease. It won't catch all the shavings, but most of them. Then I usually take a shop-vac and a small piece of vacuum hose, hold my hand over the two to create a seal, and vacuum the heck out of that cylinder. May want to rotate the engine by hand a little bit to be sure you get all you can. They have a plug hold repair kit for the 4.6 and 5.4 liter Fords that I've used many times, and never had a problem using this method. Good luck. Brian

The kit consists of a tap, inserts and a swedge tool. But these are only for the notorious problems that the Triton engines have for blowing spark plugs out of the aluminum heads, and stripping the threads. Your chaser will do just fine and is intended for what you are needing to do. To turn the engine by hand, you can put a wrench and socket on the crankshaft bolt to turn it slowly by hand. That way you have more control over how much you turn it, versus using the starter to turn it over. Hope that this helps. Brian.

Runinbear,
Please defeat the engine's ability to start before you turn it over by hand. Key off, coil wire removed, battery disconnected, dist. cap off, etc. Any of these will be sufficient.

I would bring the piston on that cylinder up as far as possible before using the thread chaser. The suggestions for grease in the flutes and to vacuum it out after are right on the money.
