On a scale of 1-10 I'd call it a 3 or 4. Its not too hard to replace, but it usually gets a little messy. You have to pull the glove compartment out, and then the cover of the heater core is more exposed. Pop the cover off, and the core is exposed, overall not too bad.
You should be able to find one at most any autoparts store ($50 last I checked).
I guess this is a common problem. I have an '88 F-250 XLT Lariat. I smelled antifreeze in the cab last week, every time I cut on the defroster the windows fogged up worse. I felt the carpet under the glovebox and it's wet. So, I bypassed the heater core by removing the heater hoses from the core and cut a piece to go from the supply to the return port of the engine so I can drive to work, but....it was 19 Degrees this morning and no heat sucks. Luckily I have a block heater and starting is no issue. So, $22 for a new core from advance, some new heater hoses and clamps, and a gallon of antifreeze....and help from FTE. Wish me luck.
