want to know if the 99 and up f 250 and 350 diesels are obd 2 compliant was going to buy the equus 3140 scanner but it doesnt list the trucks.I am going to buy one soon (the truck) so it would be nice to know before hand. just a side note anybody had any experience with that scanner?
I have no experience with that brand of scanner. The trucks are OBD II compliant BUT not all scanners will go into the components deep enough to pull the codes out. I would recommend the AutoEnginuity brand with the added Ford bundle. It's rather expensive and you need a laptop computer to run the tests on your truck, but it will dig deep and run numerous test for you. I wouldn't buy any code scanner without someone on here telling you it will work on your truck.

yes they are but 250 & 350 are classed as above 8000# gvw so it is not mandatory i guess??
It's actually 8500lbs or more up until 2004. From that point of '05 to present they are actually OBDII.
In either case...You should not have any issues. The 3140 scanner that you are looking at...does both OBDI and OBDII. The '99+ SD's have the OBDII port...so no issues there either. Plus...you are actually getting all the OBDI adapters too. Nice kit.
OBTW: I have the EQUUS 3130 scanner...and it works just fine on my 2003 SD V10 (see sig). It does do what it claims...and works nice.
If Equus does not list the diesels, then it doesn't work. Period. Several of these posts above mine are confusing, so I'll help you out.
The Powerstrokes do have an OBD-II port. However, they are technically NOT OBD-II compliant. Meaning that standard OBD-II scanners will hook up but not be able to pull any codes from the PCM. The reason is that Ford has a completely manufacture specific list of codes only for the Powerstrokes. These codes are unrecognizable by standard OBD-II scanners.
Whatever scan tool you are purchasing, it must list that it is compatible with the Ford Powerstrokes in order to work. Like Joe-M mentioned, AutoEnginuity with the Ford Bundle will work with the Powerstrokes. That's what I use, and it's one of the more popular scan tools with diesel owners.
AutoTap works fine with these trucks too. It is also a laptop software package. It is intuitively easy to use and works with OBD-II and CAN compliant systems. I have used it for 6 years now and I highly recommend it. I apologize if this sounds like a commercial but I really like this product.
I'm not sure about the OBD II stuff, but I did notice one peice of information that needed updating. All 2005 and up Super Duties (or 2003 and up with the 6.0L diesel) are OBD II - CAN systems, so you need a reader that is CAN compliant to work on them.
