Runs Rough-Dies

I have a 1989 7.3 with a ats turbo on it. I was driving today with a low fuel level and it ran out, so i switched to the front tank. I then refilled the rear and switched back. It then started surging in 4th and 5th gear and running rough. And while sitting at idle it will eventally stall after about 1-2 mins or so. i dont know if it is related to the selector switch, or what the heck is going on. any ideas?

sounds like to me like something maybe got stirred up in the rear tank. does the problem continue when you switch back to the other tank? just curious, if it does the same thing on the other tank, is it possible there an air intrusion in the system? don't know if this helps, but it's a guess.

I had a problem similar to that once I ran a tank dry. I would suspect air. Also it could be the selector valve. Ive heard that they go bad on the IDIs and they can restrict flow and introduce air. I would start with the basics and check for air. Good Luck

What would be the best methods to troubleshoot this issue?

If it is doing it on both tanks I would prime they system.
Crack the #1 injector line and crank the engine till you see fuel seeping out then close the line. It is kinda like bleeding the brakes. If that does not fix it, then it may be your selector switch.
