K&N or AFE?
I installed a JLT True Cold Air KIt on our 2K 5.4 Expy EB. Siimple install boosted MPG and comes with S&B filter which filters dirt better than K&N. Check it out not a bad price either I think it was $150 shipped. Go to their web sit "jlttruecoldair.com" and check it out. Good luck! indy6003

Can I ask just a simple question?: Why would you want super hot engine compartment ambient air to be forced directly into an air filter? The stock set up - while not perfect - draws in cold, dense air into throttle body, which is what the engine needs for complete and efficient combustion. Doesn't this system produce a lot of noise? I guess I don't really understand the principles of what this thing does that improves what the stock filter system provides. Not knocking it, I just don't understand it. Maybe installing something like the double electric fans vice the engine driven fan together with this might provide some small measurable improvement. Couldn't you just modify the stock air filter tube where it pulls from the drivers front fender to somewhere that provides even colder air?

I was using an FPIK K&N and changed the filter to an AMSOIL direct replacement. VERRY HAPPY WITH PERFORMANCE!!

The kits have seen create a cold air box around the open filter, keeping the hot air away. I agree and open filter in a hot engine is not a good idea, not on today's engines anyway.
On my 98 Mark VIII we remove the air silencer (get a tad deeper growl to the engine) and drill out the air box to allow for more intake. Add a performance filter, chip and exhaust to take advantage of the added inflow of air - sweeeeet performance. Get maybe 1-2 MPG better, not much but it is really about the performance.
