It's not about penny pinching for me, but why waste the money and time? I know it's a little different, but when you're fuel tank is 1/2 empty, do you dump your fuel and put new in. I mean it is in-fact 1/2 used up.
To each his own, there is really nothing to argue about here, it's personal preference. I know some people will re-fuel when the tank is 1/2 empty. I'm one of those that will re-fuel when the thing says I have 25 miles to empty. It's about like arguing when you should re-fill your fuel tank. Everyone has their own preference.
oh man, we go thru this about every 2-3 mnths, will the admin kill any thread that starts will " 10000 miles oil change....or the like . It should be in the tech files or at least read your manuals...everyone ends up calling each other's BS

I agree. Someone comes on here asking for advice and all you end up hearing is how someone that changes their oil every 1,000 miles is right and everyone else is wrong.
Just being on the safe side by following the recommended oil change for heavy use. Why push the limit to save a few bucks on regular maintenance items. I have a lot invested in my truck and I feel the minimum recommended interval for regular maintenance is the way to go. I'll stick with 5K. To each his own.
I base mine on fact more than gut feeling. We have 18 new 6.4 trucks in our fleet since march of 07. We run the oil to 9,000 miles of hard use. Each engine gets a UOA every 2 oil changes for the first 50K then one UOA every 30k after. The 6.4 under hard use (long idle periods and towing) starts to shear CJ-4 oil around 9,800 miles. So blackstone told us 9,000 is a good change interval.Just because the oil turns black does not mean you have to change it. It is doing its job keeping all the soot particles in suspension.
You guys have way too much time on your hands. LOL Hey wait a minute, I'm actually reading these posts. I have too much time on my hands. Oh well, to each his or her own. My Father-in-law would change his oil by adding a quart when ever it was low. Not flaming, just playing!

I am all for everyone posting their differences in changing oil. That way when someone has a problem that is caused by "lack of maintenance" hopefully they will post that problem and the cause. Just have to keep a journal of how does what I guess.
These types of questions will almost always provide a contrast between the owner whos truck and its maintenance has become their passion or hobby and the operators who are seeking the lowest cost per mile of operation.
As a fleet operator, miles per gallon of fuel is important but so is miles per oil change/maintenance interval.
