I am coming due for my first oil change and I'm confused. The manual states 15 qt capacity, but some on here are saying 13 qts. Those of you that have done oil changes, how much are you putting in?
Also, what are your thoughts on moving to 5W-40? I live in Indiana and temps can sometimes get below 0. Also, we tow a 10,000 lb travel trailer and make about 4-6 trips a year with about 1-2 of them about 1000 miles round trip. I just don't want to be changing oil weights back and forth, but not sure if I need to go to the 5W-40. My daily driving is about 25-35 miles with about 85% of that highway.
Lastly, should I use Motorcraft brand oil? I read that the oil manufacturers are moving to a new API certification that Ford does not support.
I just changed the oil in my '16 F350, you won't drain all the old oil but most of it. I put in 13 qrts of Rotella T6 5w40 and it showed full. I used 15w40 Rotella in my old '02 7.3 and the 5w40 is recommended by a bunch of guys on most diesel forums. You can use the Ford oil if you wish but I choose Rotella T6.
Any diesel motor oil rated API CJ-4 or better per your owners manual. This motor is different than the older types, so, synthetic and lower weights for starting not quite the same necessity, as a high pressure oil pump and HEUI injectors for the older types. Consult the chart for weights of Dino and synthetic for your operating needs and temperature ranges, i.e. Towing, cold starts.
Rotella changed their formula for the T6 from CJ-4 to CK-4 in the last few weeks. At Walmart, I bought it and it was CJ-4 two weeks ago, today it is CK-4 on the shelves. Ford specifically does not support CK-4 at this time.
Can't tell where you are or temps your experiencing. Are you towing? 15w40 Dino oil, or 10w30 if cold enough. Need 15w40 for towing. Or you can go a synthetic 0 or 5 w40 all year round.
I normally run the Rotella T6 5W-40W because that has been recommended for severe service or when using diesel with biodiesel in it. Just about all diesel now has biodiesel blended with it.
I just changed the oil in my 2017 F350 6.7L for the first time. I used the Shell Rotella T6 5-40 CJ-4.
I called Ford customer service to confirm quantity of oil to put in? They said the manual is wrong-correct amount of oil for the 2017 6.7L is 13 quarts. Manual will be updated at next reprint.
