gas milage...

im looking into buying an 03 ranger fx4 with the 4.0 motor auto tranny... im wondering what the gas milage is i have found a few sites stating 16 city but im assuming thats in 2wd when it goes into 4wd how much does it kill the milage if any, and what would be some after market stuff i could add to the truck for better milage?? thanks for the help im lookin forward to hearin from you all!!

Welcome. I'm not sure exactly what the 4.0L SOHC is good for mileage-wise, but driving around in 4WD will probably have some affect on it. But is it really that much of a concern what kind of mileage the truck gets in 4WD? You won't be using it that much, will you?

Concerning my '02 4.0 auto 4x4, I always drive with my ScanGauge II plugged in the OBD2 port, and amazingly, I get the same gas mileage in 4wd as I do in 2wd.. about 12-13mpg in 0-15 degree weather, 14.6 in colder weather (20 to 40 degrees) and 16.2 in milder weather (mostly city-ish driving). It isn't driven in warmer weather conditions, so I have no idea what that mpg would be

I had a late 80's Toyota 4x4 that went from 20mpg in 2wd to about half that in 4wd
