Emmissions and Catalytic Problems

Hey fellas,

My Vehicle: '96 Ford Explorer V6/4.0L

I am trying to get it inspected (New York State) but, unfortunately, I am getting the P0420 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold) code.

I have been reading about this code, and usually, as I am sure you are all aware, it means the Catalytic Converter is failing. But I don't see any of the related "symptoms" occuring that are associated with failure of the catalytic(i.e. Acceleration Problems, Low RPM, Smell). I am worried that there could be another problem that is causing this one.

Before I go out and spend $300.00+ to get this fixed, do any of you have any suggestions?

Thanks.

There is a pcm reflash for code P0420 unless the pcm is at the latest calibration.

Beware cheapo aftermarket cats. My smog man told me he'd seen 'em fail worse than the worn out stocker they replaced.

pcm reflash

antony,

What is a PCM reflash? Is this like a EEPROM Firmware Flash or something?

They are computer updates that can be performed at the dealership. However, an OBD-II catalyst failure is different than the failures on older vehicles. It basically uses oxygen storage/consumption as a means of monitoring the catalyst. Which means, that a P0420 code may not be a bad converter at all, but can also be any condition that either takes the converter outside its normal operating parameters, eg. flooding it with excessive oxygen. Faulty O2 sensors often contribute to the problem.

As a general rule, if you have a P0420 code, there is another problem that exists as well. A problem that may not trigger a CEL, but over time damages the converter. This is usually caused by an O2 sensor. As they start to go bad, the mixture richens up slightly, causing damage to the substrate. It does not always show up as melted or broken substrate.

As far as aftermarket converters are concerned, I agree, most of them are just cheap garbage, plus they are not the easiest things to install on the rangers/ explorers. The 4.0L has a large oval flange, which is much larger and differently shaped than the round openings on universal weld ins. Much better to go with something that just bolts right in. Bear River Converters is a sponsor and we make a point of stocking this part as a direct bolt in.
