Should I get this option on my new truck? I have a Tekonsha Prodigy on my 02 and it works great. Should I stick with it or get the Ford piece? It looks like the Ford piece will blend in better with the dash, but does it work well??
I've ordered the factory controller on every truck I've bought since it came out. I've never had a problem with them and as you said they're in the dash so it blends in better.
I have a Prodigy in my 150 but hate the "appendage" attached to the dash. Certainly not the main reason for buying, but something that was a major consideration was the integrated controller in the SD. It actually seems to work better. I have the complete tow package w/ the 6.4 so that is part of it.
The Ford brake controller is an excellent choice. I have it in 3 of my trucks and would never get another one without it. It's reliable, easy to adjust the output and fully integrated with the trucks' computer and brake systems. I can't think of a single reason not to get it.
I guess I didn't know the trailer brake was an option on the SD's, but yes, absolutely get the factory installed brake. I have that on my 06 F250 and it is part of the Tow Command system. I admit I have limited experience with brake controllers, but this controller has been outstanding in pulling my travel trailer. I think the factory brake is based on the Prodigy, but goes beyond that. Just set the brake depending on your tow requirements and you never have to do anything else. Plus, with the Tow Command system, you have the added benefit of engine braking on downhill grades. The integrated brake looks nice in the panel and works seamlessly. Go for it. Enjoy the new truck.
Had it on my '05, got it on the '08. Best controller I've ever used. proportional braking according to vehicle braking, even gives you a form of ABS on the trailer brakes.......
It sounds as if most everyone thinks highly of the Ford brake controller.
The only thing that might be a consideration in not gettin it is that it does not work for some kinds of disc brakes which I believe are being put on more trailers these days. Ford's controller is certified for electric brakes only.
I'm getting a new fifth wheel that has Carlisle disc brakes. Ford's controller will not work for these disc brakes, but various Tekonsha models will, including the Prodigy.
