One of my trucks just died on the side of the interstate and the driver is telling me that the backlight for the cluster is on, but nothing else on the cluster works. No tach, No odo, no speedo, nothing. He also states that the accelerator is inoperative. The motor runs, he can put it in drive and it will idle along, but it won't do anything else. I am thinking maybe the PCM went bonkers. Anybody have anythoughts? I have an exact copy of this truck at the shop so I can rob peter to pay paul just to get it back to our yard.
The truck is a 2002, f350 4x4, SRW w/ 7.3L powerstroke and automatic transmission. No Mods.
If the ECM doesn't see an Idle Validation after startup, it will not accept information from the throttle position sensor (the throttle potentiometer). It will just keep idleing.
Put your throttle all the way to the floor. Start engine while leaving throttle pedal on the floor. Let off throttle, but only a little bit, then go all the way to the floor again.
NOW, let pedal ALL the way up, and then see what happens. (Hint: Don't put the pedal to the metal again this time.)
From what you are saying, It would sound like a fuse, which is the first thing I had him check, but he says he checked them and everything is good. I am not sure though, it is dark and he may have missed something. Plus, he may not be checking the right ones. Anyone know the exact fuse to hit for an 02? My parts truck regretable does not have its manual so I will have to wait until I drive out there in the morning to find out what the deal is. The driver is close to his brothers house, so he is going to limp it there and then borrow his old truck to get home tonight.
The no go issue does sound related to the throttle position switch and that one fuse sounded like a good explanation of all your problems. Can you tell us exactly what happened? Was he just cruising down the road and all the guages died at once? Did he hit a bump or anything before things stopped working? Did the symptoms come and go or just all at once? Does he have a check engine light? When he pushes the accelerator does the engine rev up or stay at idle? Has he tried selecting a different gear?
In a 2000, there's a 10-amp fuse, #19, in the under-dash panel that is common to the instrument panel and Idle Validation Switch.
Overhead console, too.
Maybe a different fuse number in a 2002, however.
Pop
Hey Pop,
If you can tell me what the description listed in the owners manual for fuse 19 in the 2000 model is I can run outside and check my 02 manual for the same description.
Well gents, I had him go back and check ALL the ten amp fuses in the panel and sure's shootin, there was one blown. He stuck a replacement in there and he is back in business. He is gonna stop at a service station and get some additional fuses in case it happens again on the way home, and tomorrow we will delve into it when he comes into work to see if there is any specific reason it blew. THANKS SO MUCH to all the quick posters. That saved me a TON of time and made my driver's evening so much better.
