so i'm starting to have problems with my cats after 225,000mi, and went to the local exhaust pros to have them build me a header-back system with high flo cats. They told me that there were 4 cats and 4 cats would have to be put back on. Is there anyway to put just two cats on? i noticed there isn't any sensors between the two on each side like on chevys so i don't see why it wouldn't. Has anyone run across this? I just want 2.5in dual pipes all the way out like it is now (pipes have been on since new and are very rusty) with 2 hiflo cats and run the o2 sensors as much factory as i can.
Unfortunatley, no you have to put all 4 back on, that's the law. The 2 up front are pre-cats and the 2 in back are regular cats. I know it sux but that's how it is.
thanks frankford for the quick reply! however, i live in kansas and we have no emission laws that i know of, and if there is there are no enforcement measures to speak of. so i guess what i need to know is if i can run the hi flow cats without causing any computer or driveability issues.
I have a 97 150 that I put headers on and dropped the Y pipe and hollowed
the rear two converters. With a flowmaster cat back the truck runs great
and passes emissions and I live in pennsylvania . I believe that the two rear (cats) are for sound tone ,also I just flipped 200k

Yes, there are on both counts. There are emission laws everywhere in the nation because the feds have them. You can be cited for no catalytic converters on any traffic stop, and if your truck is loud they can stop you for suspecting you have no converters. Tampering with your emission system carries some pretty stiff fines if they choose to really push it.
As long as the two cats you install address all of the things the 4 cats you have now do, you are legal. You can't replace the factory 3 way cats with 2 way cats.
You can run with 2 cats just fine and not get a light.
And no they cant legally stop you on suspicion. The feds have no enforcment procedures on emmisions so thats an empty threat. As long as you dont have local testing your good to go.
the exhaust note from my truck has changed to a more muffled sound and i'm getting horrible gas mileage, and the truck has a quarter million miles so i figured they're getting clogged. why can you not replace 3 way cats with 2 way, whats the difference? I was going to get rid of the precat and just run the two high flo cats.
thanx scott you've answered all my questions! i had planned on building a new system, cuz my pipes are rusted badly as i stated in the original post. would 2.5" pipes be too big? i don't want to lose all backpressure. 3" would sound cool, but were almost to big for my V10, let alone a 1.4L smaller V8.
I have a 97 f-150 with 206,000 miles, and had the same problem with cat clogging about a year ago. I called a few people and found out that I could get a custom manifold back true dual exaust system eliminating the 4 cats completely for 350 bucks, as opposed to the $1300 for just the cats. The only problem I ran into was I had to put 97 model ford mustang o2 eliminators ($140) on the rear two o2 sensors to avoid the engine code problem. I also learned that there wasn't a manufacture of cats that would work with no engine codes besides the factory ones.
The o2 eliminator manufacture said that until my computer reprogrammed itself I might get an engine light. sure enough I did, but It went away and hasn't returned for at least 9 months now.
