Ouch LxMan1, thats as much as i payed for the truck! I'm trying to get by as cheap as i can, without getting rid of the cats entirely. The 2 aftermarket cats sound like it might work, is there really any difference in a performance cat and stock cat? I've heard both ways.
And no they cant legally stop you on suspicion. The feds have no enforcment procedures on emmisions so thats an empty threat. As long as you dont have local testing your good to go.
If you have a loud truck they can and will pull you over to make sure you have a muffler. If during the course of the inspection they happen to notice that you don't have a catalytic converter they can do two things. One, they can cite you for not having a legal exhaust system. Two, they can turn you in to the EPA who can collect a nice $2500 fine from you and/or the shop that did the work. Lucky for many of us they have been very lax in enforcing this law, but if you catch the cops on a bad day they will find a way to do whatever they want to you.
i got pulled over when i had my v10 with headers and dual straights. I did have cats on it but they were more worried about the lack of mufflers. Three nights in a row i'd drive down main on my way home and set about every alarm off in businesses on main and they were waiting to see what was setting off the alarms.
