Whats the general consensus on this? I know they whine like a **** & sound like a blower, but are there any downsides/reliability issues etc?
I seem to remember reading that Edelbrock have this set up listed, anyone else?
Truck (F350 crew cab Dually) currently has a knackered 429CJ in it, started to pull it out this afternoon. Other options are 460 or a 429 Thunderjet. Thinking of dropping the TJ in the truck & rebuilding the CJ for my '69 Cougar....
Some newer trucks with knock sensors will have issues with them. And others may require special machining of the timing cover housing for proper fittment.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-Oct-02 AT 09:42 AM (EST)]No knock sensors here, & the only thing downwind of the exhaust valves are a pair of glaspaks.... shortly to become dual chamber FlowMasters. I want noise
My cousin has one on his chebby 350. It was on there when he got it and he's considering taking it off. I don't think there's a performance increase from them. In fact, I would think you'd loose some as the gears cause more drag than a chain. What you do gain (according to what I read) is accuracy and you don't have to worry about chain stretch.
I've also read that they shouldn't be used over 7000 RPM or on computer controled vehicles with knock sensors.
I love the way they sound but are a bit pricey (about $230 for the Edelbrock for my 460).
I have an Edelbrock gear drive on my 514. The exhaust comes out in front of the rear tires, 3" all the way out, with a nasty cam, but you hear the gear drive from blocks away. Sometimes it makes it a challenge just listening for a ticking noise, or just hearing the engine over the whine. According to an Edelbrock ad i read before buying it, thiers were quieter than the others. And after hearing mine, i'd suggest the Pete Jackson "quiet". The back of your timing cover will need to be machined, so be prepared. At least my '68 cover did.
