a 429 cj in your bronco...i doubt that it would be a good choice because of the huge intake ports on the heads, it would take away alot from the bottom end of the motor, and thats what its gonna take to get your truck movin off the line. now as for top end, a cj would be awesome. of course it all depnds on cam and compression ratios, but why not go with a 460 with about 9:1 compression and a decent cam...gobs of torque way down low and decent midrange power, too. just my 2 cents...

I ran a 429 SCJ in a 1969 Bronco back in the early 1980's. I had to do all the custom work myself include building the oil pan and fabricating the headers. Now days I believe you can buy a kit.
The Bronco ran like a "raped Ape" but part of the success was running 4:56 gears and a 3,500 stall converter (modified C-6). I would spin the engine to 7,000 RPM. The Bronco was definetly a "toy" and not an every day driver. On a stock 429 CJ I would expect you'd get 8-9 MPG. If your going to run your Bronco as an every day driver and do some off road 4 wheeling, you'd probably be better off with a mildly modified 460. If your going to race and you have a big bank account, go for the "CJ"...even then I'd go for the extra cubes (460 with CJ or after-market heads).

Actually, I have a friend in Seymore Mo., and he runs a 51 Chevy shortbed stepside on a newer Ford 4x4 frame. The motor is a real, big valve Cobra Jet, with a mild build. He's using about a 450 lift with no work done on the heads othere than a good clean up. Now, athough he only has about 7 grand or so into the intire truck, I have seen his truck in local ameture mud racing against people with high dollar rigs. Only once did his truck not make it though the pits and only one truck actually did make it that time. Although I am new to Fords, I do know that the 429 is an excilent motor for just about antything, nomatter what size valves it has. Every motor performs according to how it is built. However, if you don't want the heads, we can always negotiate a price!
