Wait, I have an 87 302 truck block behind my garage!! It was flat tappet from the factory but from what I've read...Could I get some OEM roller lifters cheap, and a used spider bar assembly off of ebay and a used roller cam and it work without all the hassel of special pushrods and clearancing stuff (I would be using after market heads with the engine)
If it's an 87 block it should be a roller. Look at the casting numbers, should be either E6SE or E7TE. The lifter valley will have two raised bosses above the #'s 2 & 4 cam journals. These may or may not be drilled and tapped for the spyder hold down bolts. If you have these drilled and don't want to damage the cam bearings, watch the depth on drilling. If replacing the bearings, don't sweat damaging them.
thats sweet!! I just went out side to check for the bosses and it has them. So I can get a used spiderf assembly, get some oem roller lifters from summit pretty cheap, and a used roller cam and I'm on my way right? Boy that sure beats paying 400 or more for retro lifters and 200 for retro cam pushrods etc.
Yea, that's why it's cheaper to start with a roller block. You can pickup used B303 cams over on Stangnet.com for $50 occasionally. I bought a new second hand Z303 for my 331 there for $115 shipped. There's always someone selling new or little used roller stuff there cheap. If you'll eventually want to get into serious roller performance, might be better to buy a set of Crane's O.E. replacement roller lifters. These are what I run with my Canfield heads on the 331 and on a previous 302 build. Good for 7500 rpms vs about 6500 for the Ford rollers.
