OK, need some more opinions. I'm going to be replacing my 4.9 6 cyl with a 5.0 EFI out of a 92-96 truck. I already plan on doing some engine work, cam, rod and main bearings etc.. Whats the general HP rating on these engines stock? What do I need to do to get it up to around 300 hp, without a bottle? How radical (and expensive) will I have to get?
only reason i meantioned going 5.8 is the power comes much cheaper to reach your goal. and is the same amount of work involved since you basicly are removing everything related to the 300-6
On a stock 94-97 shortblock, all you need is better heads. The Explorer 5.0 was rated at 210 hp with the same shortblock topped with GT40P heads. Upgrade to something like AFR165's or similar and you'll get 300 hp without trying with the stock roller cam.
Ported stock heads like the Thumper E7's and a bit more than the HO cam will get you 300+ crank HP.. assuming the induction and exhaust system can support it as well. AFR claims the 165 heads with 1.7 rockers, carb, and longtubes made 400hp on an otherwire stock 5.0HO. http://airflowresearch.com/articles/article087/A-P1.htm You'll notice that peak occurs at just over 6000rpm.
Thanks everyone, I'll do some research on heads. I've also have a friend that builds dirt track engines (chevys though) and see what he says. I will be changing my rear gear, its a 2.73 now!
