does anyone know how the chain is set both marks on the gears face each other but put timing cover on then balancer on and line the o mark with point on cover just need to know how to do it right
Hi and Welcome to the club. Every timming chain I have ever done goes like that.... Line up the dots so they face each other then timming cover, the Balancer you cant get wrong as it has a Woodruff key, (Just make sure you dont forget to use it) If I am wrong I am sure someone will let me have it! lol.... or tell you different
thank you it was a father son project but my dad passed away and im tring to finish it what about the mark on the balancer does that line up with the point on the timing cover then i put the distributor in and facing toward the #1 spark plug
Yes it should. "If it does not" the timming will be 180 degrees out. When you drop in the distributor the rotor should point to the #1 hole on the cap(where the plug wire goes) Sorry about your Dad, my father passed away last October so I know exactly what you are going through. Hang in there friend and keep on that Project... and ask all the Questions you need to. where here to help!
+1 what Bill W said plus make sure that the #1 cylinder is on the compression stroke at TDC(zero on the balancer). You can do this by pulling the #1 sparkplug and when you either hear a rush of air or put your finger in the sparkplug hole and feel the pressure push your finger out you're on the compression stroke.
Also when dropping the distributor down make sure you have the oil pump driveshaft positioned properly or the distributor won't drop down all the way.Don't force the distributor!
Finally when dropping the distributor make sure that the rotor lines up exactly with the #1 tower or you might be one gear off. The gears are helical cut so you start a little counterclockwise of the #1 tower and when you drop the distributor it will rotate slightly clockwise and line up with the #1 tower.
First of all your profile says you have a 63 truck.
If this is so STOP!
The 292 and the 223 do not use the modern timing marks on the gears.
Timing marks do not line up on the gears.
If you did this and have buttoned up the engine and started it you have bent internal parts and damaged the engine.
I do not have the shop manual in front of me but the timing marks go parallel to the ground and are a certain number of links apart.
My engine manual is back in Arizona and i am in PA. So i canoot say with 100 percent accuracy if they face to the passenger side or the drivers. I think the passenger and are 12 links apart.
This is very critical when replacing the timing chain on the I6 or the V8. Number one cause of bent parts is the incorrect install.
