I have a 1992 F150 with a 4.9 5spd 2WD and it is sticking in gears. I thought maybe it was a fluid problem with the syncros getting hot so I changed my tranny fluid it still sticks. This is the 3rd transmission in 165000 miles. It hasnt had an easy life but nothing incredibly overbearing. I havent been able to find a ZF to put in it, so I was considering puting in a heavier transmission from a 3/4 or 1 ton with a 351 5spd, I believe it they are the M5HD. Has anybody tried this and is there a special adapater required? I already have a 11spline clutch pack. Or does anybody have a zf within 500 miles of San Diego?
The M5HD (M5OD-HD) is the ZF transmision. The M5OD trannys have problems with the shifter forks wearing which makes it difficult to shift in and out of gear. If you haven't replaced them it'd be worthwhile to pull the shifter and see if the shift forks are worn.
no, the shifter forks are not hard if you pay attention take detailed pics and put it all back together carefully without a hammer. I broke one side off of one on my 96 f-150. I rebuilt the whole thing. First one ever and it still goes. I had a bearing out in 3 or 4th too. I bought the parts from Percision Built. A whole lot cheaper than dealer. Not to be pimping them. I lost the pics I had on a laptop that blacked out.
