I picked up a 360 core last weekend, and I'm rebuilding it for my truck since it's 360 insists on smoking. At any rate, it's a mirror 105 D4TE. I'm going to be cleaning it up and going all through it, so if anybody wants pictures of something specific let me know. I'm going to be dropping a 4BBL intake on this one too, but keeping the stock exhausts for now.
I've been looking at the pump that I think was on my truck and now think something is missing. I did score a different set-up last week, but now wonder about different configurations.
I think it's just done, I'm swapping that one out with this one I'm rebuilding, then rebuild that one and drop it in my 72 4x4.
I stumbled across this engine on CL for $50, knew it was a smoker to start with, so I tore into it. Doesn't look too bad inside, the valve seals are trashed, but there is no ridge and the bores look really nice. All gaskets were factory, too. It was crapped up pretty bad inside, so I'm stripping, steaming it, and doing bearings and oil pump. I might run a flex hone down the bores to break the glaze, too.
No a/c on this one, unfortunately.
BTW, if anybody wants a free 2BBL intake, I have two to give away now.
Well, I'm getting ready to put this thing back together. The bearings were toast, and it had a burned/cracked valve. If I had spent more than $50 on it, I would have wanted my money back. This thing was about the most crap-filled FE I've ever seen also.
All journals and bores are within stock specs, so I'm just going to put it back together with a ring and bearing kit from Summit. I did do a couple oiling mods to it, namely matching up the main bearing oil holes to the holes in the bearings so they don't get starved again, and cleaning up the main oil passage from the pump to the filter.
Got it in last weekend, dialed it in a bit, hooked up the trailer Saturday morning and went east. 350mile round trip over a 3000ft pass, hauling an 1800lb trailer there and about 5500lbs on the way back altogether, and crested Snoqualmie Pass at ~65mph. This was with a Holley 4160 on a C6AE iron 4BBL, truck exhaust manifolds, dual 2 1/4" glasspacks, 3.73 rear end with 33" tall rear tires, and that Summit timing set advanced 4º on an otherwise stock 360.
It's not a hot rod, but does the job just fine.
I also propose that the official title FE stands for be changed to "Fuel Eliminator" since it sucked down all the gas I could throw at it.
Ford six, I'm opening up a 360 tomorrow and am looking at cleaning up, checking out type of deal. Motor had great compression with great oil pressure. Has this engine held up well for you? For advancing the cam timing did you get fancy with cam timing wheel or just put it on the 4 degree advance mark? Has this caused any problems? Do you have the later heads with the c6 intake. I have a c5 I believe and have read about a port mismatch. Has this caused any major issues? I'll be running a 600 holley on it with manifolds and duals also and be getting the cam at least to 0 if not 4 degrees advanced. Most of this is due to budget restraints and that I have most of these parts already. thanks
