I replaced the egr valve to find out it was the dpfe sensor, problem solved, 6 months later luckily right before the warranty ran out the dpfe went again. replaced it with a new one and problem solved. its been about a year and truck wont start again although I did let it get very low on gas I think it might be the sensor again, anyone know why it might be going bad again and again?
Thanks for any help
Well if it's the DPFE sensor again, maybe it's a bad production run. Was it a Ford, or aftermarket part????
If you have a poor running engine, it could be excessive carbon deposits, plugging the reference port.
The DPFE sensor should be under the longer emissons system warranty, it seems to me. So check your warranty statement about length of coverage for the Ford DPFE sensor.
its a 2000 ford ranger 3.0 4wd kingcab. it is an aftermarket dpfe sensor from autozone if it makes a difference. I hate it when my truck is down although it is pretty dependable otherwise.
And can you tell me where to go in the forums to add a signature to your posts, thanks a lot
Just scroll up to & click on the "User Control Panel" in the dark blue bar, atop the page your reading this post on. When that page opens, on the left side find "Edit Signature".
On the "no start problem", does it try to fire & run at all????
just cranks, once it seemed like it wanted to fire but every attempt after that it just turns over. when it died on me this time it started ran about a minute and died it would not start after that, it was very low on gas and cold out (about 20 degrees). I waited till it warmed up outside now about 40 degrees and put 5 gal of fuel in it. turn the key over several times to allow fuel pump to get fuel up there like my book says but still no luck.
I don't see edit sig in the control panel, I can edit a lot of other things but no signature but thanks
Well maybe you have to have a certain number of posts, to be able to have a signature, I can't remember??? The "Edit Signature" option is atop the left most list in the options colum on my window.
On the start problem, do you have a CEL lit???? If so, do you have a scan tool, or a code reader that you could post any trouble codes found stored in the computer.
Do you have a fuel pressure tester, that'll hook up to the fuel rail????
Check to make sure the fuel pump is running for a couple of seconds, when you go to "Run", on the ignition switch.
If you can't hear it run, check the fuel pump cutoff "inertia switch" in the passnger side footwell, just above the carpet line & make sure it hasn't been bumped & tripped.
If that checks out ok, look in the under hood power distribution fuse panel & make sure the fuel pump relay power fuse is good & that the fuel pump relay is closing when the ign key is set to run & that you have power to the inertia switch.
I'll have to pull the code again and see, last time it was p0401 I believe which was emiision/gas related which led me to the dpfe. I'll pull it again and let you know what I find out. thanks for your help. hopefully autozone has a fuel pressure tester as well.
I went to the dealership today and found out DPFE sensor went out on my 97 ford expedtion. What is this device and will it cause problems such as the vehicle shutting off all comments are appreciated.

Welcome to FTE.
DPFE = Differential Pressure Feedback Egr.
It senses a differential pressure between the intake & exhaust & sends a signal to the computer, which it uses with other sensor inputs, to help it decide how much EGR to give the engine.
I suppose if things were wacky enough, it could allow so much EGR feedback to stall an engine.
Posting ALL the computer trouble code numbers the Dealer found, might be helpful????
ok get this. it is warmed up outside but I had no luck again in statring it. I'm taking a nap and my wife had to go take our daughter to school so she got a wild notion to try my truck, it starrted for her no problem. so I took it again to pick her up and it started fine so who knows maybe it was just out of gas this time and took a quite a few cranks to get the fuel up to the injectors.
I also have a significant power loss but this is not a recent problem, I have a 120k on the truck and have never had a tune up. do you think plugs and wires might correct some of that. I know it can't hurt.

Well the intermittent start problem could be a number of things, so with that & te lack of power, you may have more than one problem.
So, where are you on due, past & present scheduled maintenance items, like air & fuel filters, PCVvalve?????
If neither of the filters have been changed in all those miles, your WAY past due.
I agree, with it likely needing plugs & wires. Use Motorcraft, or Autolite, as they're designed for & work best in our engines.
Do you have a CEL(Check Engine Light) lit???? If so, trot this ride by your favorite autoparts store, for a no cost computer trouble code scan & post ALL the codes found.
With this mileage on it, the start conditions you've described, lack of power & maybe lack of scheduled maintenance, if they can monitor the fuel pressure & O2 sensor switching speed with their scantool, have them do that too & post the results & ALL the trouble code numbers found.
So call around & see if you can find a store that uses a scantool that'll read PID's, as it'll do more than just pull codes & be able to give us more diagnostic info.
D= all of the above.
It's running now so when I get time in a couple days it's off to autozone to have them run their scantool on it. getting new plugs and wires, fuel filter and some gas additive. will let you all know if it helps out a good bit, thanks for everyones input.
