I recently rebuilt the 460 in my 88 F250. Bored .020 and a small rv cam. Problem is it puffs smoke upon startup. Sometimes you cant even see it,but you can smell it. Other times it is a huge white cloud. The machine shop that did the heads knurled the guides and said all the valves were good so they reused them.
I even put a new set of valve seals on and it does the same thing. Any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks
Are you sure about the color because white smoke usually means coolant is getting in the combustion chamber. Now if the smoke has a blueish white it is oil. Eric
White smoke is coolant. Sounds like you have a leak into the intake manifold or a bad head gasket. Most common cause is not putting rtv around the water passages when installing the intake manifold. I'd suggest compression and vacuum checks.
I agree that replacing valve guides is the only way to go if you plan to run it for a long, long time, but if it's a patch or low-budget, knurled guides shouldn't be any problem.
