Boost trans temp and Egt install.

I just got an autometer triple A piller gauge pod with boost, mechanicle trans temp and egt gauge for my 94 factory turbo crew cab. It came with every thing needed to make it work. any way I was woudering what the best way to rout the thermo couple lead and the capilary tube for the trans temp would be or sould I send it back and get the electric trans temp. Also the best place to mount the sensing bulb in the trans and the best place for the thermocouple, Befor the turbo?, after the turbo?, or the exaust manifold? And finaly wher would be an easy place to get keyed power for the EGT gauge. I would apriciate any input. Thanks

I will answer the pyrometer part, the best place is in the exhaust manifold.
Pyrometers are to protect pistons, the closer to the pistons you get your readings the better off you are.

Mine is mounted in the exhaust port at the back of the drivers side head, but my engine was out of the truck when I installed it.
It is still possible to do it in the truck, but it would have been a bit harder.

You should be able to find a fuse in the fuse panel under the dash that is only hot when the key is on, that is where I got power from.
94 models are a bit different, but I think you should still be able to find one.

the trans sensor should be installed in the cooler line that is the outlet to the radiator , most kits have you install the sensor either in the pan or a pressure port in the side of the trans neither one gives an accurate reading of the transmission real temp. the torque converter generates the heat in the trans and fron there it goes to the cooler so by installing it in the outlet line you will know how hot it really is getting

Hey George D- I'm in the process of installing a pyrometer and boost gauge myself.

On the pyrometer, I drilled the exhaust manifold at a relatively easily accessible part of it (from inside the wheelwell on the passenger side). If you take the wheel off, it's really easy to do it there, it's even easy to get a tap in there.

As far as the wiring, I'm taking the easy way out, I got a couple of the "add a circuit" deals from Advance auto parts that you plug into the fuse panel and you can run a separate circuit off of. I'm using one for the gauge lighting (off the cluster illumination fuse, of course) and one for the 12V switched (I think I'm gonna use the fuse that does the power windows and some other stuff for that one)

If you get ilumination power from the fuse panel, you will not be able to dim or turn the lights off unless it is a switched fuse.

I powered my gauge illumination from the ash tray light lead, it was the easiest to get to.

What wire is the power wire that runs from the dimmer switch to the instrument cluster?

I can't find it on any wiring diagrams.

Actually, it doesn't really matter, my gauges will have LED's in them and you can't dim LED's.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

If I mount the thermocouple in the manifold wouldn't that just give me readings of the one side of the engine? or does that not matter?

Ford trans tech how would I go about installing the sensor in the trans cooler line since the sensing bulb is bigger than the cooler line? And does any one know if A 280 degree gauge will work?

Thanks

ghunt,
Still you want them on and off with the lights.
My book is in the garage, I can look tomorrow.

George,
Just getting the temp from one side is fine as far as EGT goes.
If the temps are that far out of balance you will know it because of a miss or dead cylinder.

I read about a tee fitting that lets you install the temp sensor in the tranny line.
Not sure what is was or where to get it, I only know what I read on the auto tranny.

Well, yeah...

I got them hooked up today, the fuse for the gauge illumination is switched by the headlight switch. Works like a charm.

I used the fuse for the radio for 12V switched.

you need to make a trip to the home depot , it requires a plumbing tee that you can install the sensor in with plenty of flow around it , dont want to restrict the cooler flow then install either barbed fittings for use with rubber hose or my preference compression fittings so that there is an all metal connection
