OFF the WALL thought/idea

Do any RV's have actual REAL woodstoves in them?

I wonder how that could be done.

Unless it is in the very center (away from walls), I'm thinkin extreme fire hazard. You and I both know how thin the walls are. I suppose one could fabricate some kind of heat shield though.

We had a woodstove in our tent that we used to make deer camp in, that had to be 6 ft from the wall to keep it from burning.

I think that it could be done. Mabey start with an insert, some triple wall stove pipe and some sort of a ceramic tile around that??????????

I dunno?

I looked at a 38' 5th wheel once. I don't remember who made it. It had 4 slides (2 downstairs and 2 upstairs). The downstairs had the kitchen and bedroom, and the living area was upstairs. In the very front of the trailer was a gas fireplace.

Really, there isn't any reason why a wood burning fireplace or wood stove couldn't be built into any RV. You just need sufficient fire brick and the ability and positioning to properly carry that weight.

Insulation is the major deal - CENTRAL location?

How?

If it actually worked (safely), MY GOD how the heating cost would go down!

Propane in Memphis is currently $3.15 a gallon.

Wood is more or less free....

What an advantage that could become!

What about a pellet stove?

Could an RV specific version be devised?

I think it should be....

Am I onto something here?

I would think ventilation would be just as vital if not moreso.

The biggest problem I am seeing is what about CO. In order to vent the CO out of the camper you would lose most of your heat through venting. I am wondering about and outside stove. That is how the modern homes get away with it. The actual stove is outside and it is just piped in with double insulated pipe. You would have to figure out a way to haul the stove and set it up, but I think it would beat the engineering that is going to go into firebrick weight distribution in a camper that you would be adding at minimum 1500 lbs to. Just a thought.

Venting and insulation/fire shield are not going to be the problems, you have to deal with those no matter the heat source. A wood stove could be stuck in a corner somewhere with 3-4 sheets of stainless on the walls separated by 1/2" or so as heat shield (kind of like triple-wall vent pipe).

The biggest problem with a wood stove is that you can't just turn it off and hit the road like a gas furnace. I don't think you (or others) want a moving vehicle on the roads with a wood fire blazing in it, be it TT, 5er or motorhome. A pellet stove may have a little more potential, as those can be shut down much quicker than a wood stove.

Smile wood stoves

Wolfus, that is an outstanding idea ! It certainly 'woodn't' be for everyone, but I don't see why you couldn't do it. How about a potbelly or one of those narrow coal burners that used to be in every railroad passenger coach ? There are some very small wood stoves intended for saunas that might work very well. Railroad car stoves....

That sounds like an avenue for studying the problem (why reinvent what has already been perfected?).

I wish I knew of a railroad museum nearby.

Wait a minute - PADDLEWHEEL STEAMBOATS must have had something like that back in the day. I wonder if there is a riverboat museum near Memphis? There has to be!

Interesting thought..although I think it would be hard maintaining A nice even temp throughout such a small space, not to mention the added weight & possible back drafting if you tried to drive with it. I usually camp where theirs electric & just use a couple little space heaters. but hey anythings possible.

It's hard maintaining a nice even temp with a propane furnace and/or space heaters - ergo, the extra heat from an efficient wood eater could be a bonus too.

I think a wood burner may just be effective enough that waste heat may have to be vented... They get plenty hot! So the venting is a non-issue also.
