Everyone recommends the 68-71 timing set. I'm wondering though if changing to this will affect my emissions much. I know they changed to the retard set for environmental purposes. My 2 concerns are for how I'll pass emisions and how it'll affect my EFI computer if I do this. It sounds like the thing to do, but if I can't license the truck or it just confuses the heck out of the computer, then it's probably a no-go. Thanks for what y'all know.

how about doing this on a carbed engine? i too have been thinking about a cam and new timing set from the older motors but i have the blasted smog laws aswell.

Hey, cjcathey2002 your truck is 25 years old and it is now a classic, that means that it does not have to pass emmisions laws. Wait maybe that is only a cali law.
You might be off getting a performace (true roller) chain from someplace like summit racing (www.summitracing.com). If you stay with the Auto Parts one, make sure it doesn't have the nylon covered gear teeth.
Use Cloyes and you won't have to worry about quality. As leecarter said, tell the counter person you want one for a 1969 Ford 429. If you're buying parts at a discount auto chain where the level of technical expertise is controlled by a menu driven catalog, tell the clerk it's for a Ford, Thunderbird, 1969, 429 engine.
I still want to do this, but I'm still in the dark about my emissions and how it'll affect my computer. I know that if cam timing and size gets too far from stock it'll get the computer confused.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Nov-02 AT 07:08 PM (EST)]I did it on my '86 with a carb. It created a severe lean condition and I had to replace the meterring rods in the carb to get it to run. I would be very careful about doing it with an EFI engine, in fact, I would not until I had someone who has done it speak up. I used an Edelbrock roller timing gear set with three keyways. 4 degrees advanced, zero (straigh up) or 4 degrees retard.
In california, the 1977 model still has to pass smog. The 1973 model year is exempt. The rule is the model year 1973, and not the "twenty five year old" or the "classic" rule.
Replacing the timing gears with a "straight up" set, will definately insure a failed smog test. Even though the engine runs cleaner at speeds, it will not pass the idle sniffer.
the smog laws are an example of cutting off your nose to spite your face...The regulation created a cleaner idle, but a more smoggy high speed burn. Go figure...
