mystery squeal

i am pretty new to the FTE and i have found a ton of useful info on this site.

Resently my truck started making a metal on metal squealing noise. the noise is only noticeable while accelerating. i checked tall the heat shield and none of them are loose. i am wondering if it is the clutch... not sure. any help would be appreciated. the truck is a 92 f250 4x4 5sp 7.3 idi non turbo...

While accelerating I would check the U joints.

Throw out bearing is usually either when the clutch is down or up.

If it is squealing when the clutch is down, it is going out very soon.

try the alternator, my truck was making a real bad sound like grinding squealing and it turned out it was the alternator bearings.

check your engine cooling fan clutch and/or water pump bearings had the same problem in my 93 idi turbo couldn't figure it out finally I had a buddy start hittin the throttle while I listened in the engine bay. also sound travels very well through metal it may not sound like it's coming from the engine but it might be my advice is go get yourself a mechanics stethoscope they help trust me

Truck in neutral wheels blocked so it can not roll over you.
Shake the driveshaft in both directions at both ends.
If you see movement between the cross and caps in either U joint you need a new one.

I only replace mine with greasable joints, but that does require you grease them at regular intervals.
I do mine every oil change, 3000 miles.
