As a rookie to the FE world I try to remember as much info as I can but what really escapes me all of the time is the casting numbers for desirable parts. It would be great if a sticky or FAQ section could be created that is a database for casting numbers and means of identification of these parts. Or is there already a list I don't know about?
Well RC....It is a good Idea.....but one draw back....is there is so much Mis-information out there in the books including Fords own books... That it would have to be splitting hairs...
So for some general info....It wouldnt be bad...But for someone to include info on a such part number or casting that could have been used on many motor's but in maybe a different way(as in Machined in a diffrent configuration) Could throw off alot of people Including myself... Even tho, i dont deal to much with stock parts anymore, with the new tech out there...
But I really think that Bill (NumbersDummy) and G (FFR428) are pretty damn good at it..But they can only remember what they have read or seen... And give you there opinion... It shows this or that.....Bottom line..
Even after you read the numbers..It still might not be what it may seem to be... JMO..
The main problem with the lists on the net and in the books is many are error filled. And these are copied and used other places with the same errors. There are some numbers that are good. Block castings the exception as many numbers are generic and used on different bore blocks. Another good example are the C3AE-C heads. Many books and sites list them as 406 heads. Well there is a version of that head that is 406 specific and had small chambers and seat cups. Very rare to find. There are also the bread and butter 390 heads with the same casting number found on just about every 390 till the C4AE-G's came out. Guys read they are 406 hipo heads and think they are because the book or website says so. So there are variations and exceptions. Jay Brown from the FE.com site has a book hitting the press in Sept he hopes. I'm hoping Dave Shoe is working with him on casting numbers and there is some content there. But not many details other than his intake comparo's being in there have been released. I started to make my own list but it's nowhere near complete. I'm hoping Jay's book will address that and other common questions. Guess we'll see. I agree it's a great idea to have and to explain the differences.
Your right Art that's a huge undertaking. Plus the confusion of part numbers vs casting numbers. And how they are applied in error sometimes. I know Dave wanted to do a book. But does not have the time. So I'm hoping he teamed up with Jay and some of his work will be included. Dave is "THE MAN" when it comes to that. And I've learned alot form him.

There is a book...kinda. The search function over at net54 still works for me. It's not perfect, but you do get a consensus with a few caveats searching the numbers.
Well Hyp thats true.....I think Dave has a very exstensive blueprint Archive also....He's very good...
and Art your right to be able to carry that much info....with casting number and Part number and all the corrections that we only know about..would be exhausting..needless to say take up more room than FTE would want....
It bums me out to hear what you guys are saying, but I certainly understand. What about casting numbers on cranks? Can someone go to a wrecking yard and look at a stack of cranks and figure out what one is by the casting numbers?
shoot that to me too Glenn, what about the lists in Steve Christ's Book ? there is a whole 4 or 5 pages of part #'s for FE & FT items.. (heads, blocks, cranks, connct/push rods etc..) I copied it on some cheat notes for when I head to the parts yard. That way the book wouldn't get left behind or dirty. If only I could remember to take the damn stuff when I go..LOL
Christ book is about the same. Some good some bad. I think they all have been copied from each other at some points. The site I'm sending including. But overall the SC book and these lists are ok as a general guide. Just double check your numbers!
Well I know for a fact that I had a set of C4 junker heads here that were both C4AE 6090G but the exhaust port was different on one. With a sharp hump where the exh valve guides roof rolls into the head. The other has a smooth roll out the top, just a continuos arch low a bow. So there ya go same casting # and obviously a different part
There is a site I can send you. The link won't post here as there is a conflict of interest past. And this site does not permit it's link.
Most of that stuff is over with. You can post whatever you want, and I won't jump on you, and unless the spam filter catches it, there's really no issues with posting links to anywhere now.
The only exceptions I know of are sites that actively tried to recruit people from this site. And even then, it's not really verboten.
