I have an 80 F150 that has a 302 in it. I'm building up a 351w to go in it and am planning installing headers. I'm considering short tube headers for a variety of reasons. I have seen some headers listed as 302 headers and others listed as 302 and 351w and I'm thinking the difference is gotta be port size.I'm also thinking with short tube headers I could get some listed for later years 87-9? and they would work, just not bolt up to the stock exhaust. Anybody know?
Thanks for the info, 80stepside.Do you have a 351w in yours? If so, what did the port match look like and how close did they come to mounting up to the original plumbing or did you even try? No clearance issues?
The ports are not the difference. 1977 and up 351w and 302 heads are the same except for the head bolt holes. The 351w is wider than the 302, so the pipes have to be routed just a little different to clear some obstacles.
Franklin2- This is what is confusing about headers that are listed solely for 302's and then those listed for 302's and 351w. I guess the ones listed for either have pipes that are routed in a way that allows them to clear in either application, but why would they even bother making a set exclusively for the 302's and have to tool up to produce 2 different sets? ( I'm pretty sure I was looking at the same manufacturer, if not that would explain that). Given the common practice of using 351w truck manifolds on Mustangs, I would think it would be easier to go the other way. The truck still has the 302 in it, but there seems to be a lot of room in that big ol' engine bay, and nothing in the way to route around.
If you have 4x4, you have to curve around the front driveshaft on the driver's side, and squeeze between the frame and the starter on the other side. Also, since the engine deck is taller, it puts the headers higher in the truck, so the collector may be too high with 302 headers on a 351w. Come to think of it, I put longtube headers on my 351w in my 80 I used to have, and I had to take a big bar and bend the collector down some so it would not hit the tranny pan. They were cheap flowtechs. I think I got them from JCWhitney for about $100.00
It's a 2wd automatic. Yeah, I wouldn't attempt to try any long tube header that wasn't built specifically for my exact application. We're talking short tube headers here, which makes me think taller= more clearance. It's also a matter of economics, I'm sure I could find some headers that were made for my application, but I'm trying to verify my inkling that headers like 80stepside used will work as well. I've had chances to pick up used headers like them for cheap, but if they don't work, and then I gotta buy another set- well...this budget build starts going the wrong direction.
