I have a 91 F150 with 302 and M5OD trans. I started out a whirring noise in 2nd gear. Then it started getting locked up in reverse. As i was coming home last night I lost 1st and 2nd gear. I would put it in those gear selections and let out on the clutch and it would not go anywhere. So i had to come home in 3rd and 4th gear. Haven't tried 5th or reverse. Scared it would go kaboom! Could it be the shift rails or forks??
it could be a broken shift fork you would need to pull the top cover to inspect which you can do without removing the trans just need to remove the shifter pull the carpet back and remove the floor trans cover
Ok thanks! I hope thats it. I am going to tear into it tomorrow.
When I took my transmission out last time I just removed the whole shift tower. How does the shifter disconnect from the trans tower stub?? It has a stud with threads on both sides. Do I double nut the longer side to remove it?? Mine had no nut on it. The manual says to take the nut off of one side and put it on the other to remove.
that right take the nut off "the short side" and thread it on the long side and it should pull the stud out or you can just remove the 3 small torx and like you did before
ok nevermind. i have a worn shift fork. i got to looking at the cast and the whole side that fits down into the shift ring is gone, then that in turn let the shifter/ shift rail pop the end cap out. trans looks fine otherwise. need a 1st/2nd shift fork. thanks!
