i have a 99 f350 bought it bout a month ago 9in lift 6in stacks programmer ect. i has 120000 miles on it. this morning it was about 0 degrees outside and i have never had a problem with starting her in the cold it has always taken about 8 seconds for it to kick but there has always been alot of white smoke for about 15 seconds after start. this morning it would crank but it wouldnt fire the tach and the pressure gauges worked and sometimes it would jump and i thought it would start but it didnt. it has about a half tank in it and i always keep it plugged in. there were no addatives in the diesel and when it would cank there was alot of white smoke out of the exhaust but still would not run. i put diesel 911 in the tank but have not tryed to start it yet. i was reading some similar posts about jumping the GP relay should i try this and if i should how do i? if the gas is gelled should i open the fuel filter and mix some diesel 911 in there? if someone could please help it would be much appreciated!!! and please if this sounds like anyother problems could you bring them to my attention. thanks alot in advance
Eric
Yes get a screwwdriver and bridge the 2 large bolts ontop of the Glowplug relay for a bout a minute and it should energize and help your start, I was forced to do them same at 9* today my relay is going out.
thanks alot man but a few questions do i have the key in the truck and have it energhizing the gp's while i bridge the screwdriver? will a new gpr fix my problem with smoke on startup or could that be gp's that arnt working? thanks again
You can check for 12volts on both large lugs (one at a time) with the key on with a volt meter or light.. The GPR should stay on after turning key to start for about 1 minute then kicks off..
thanks alot clint i really appreciate it and i m new to diesels and got my truck for a steal from a friend of mine that lost his lisence. but when i bridge a screwdriver to jump the gpr does the key have to be turned while i am jumping the gpr then start the truck after a min or does it not matter? it is about 1 degree outside (windy also so i dont know the windchill) i was driving it all day yesterday with no problems but it did smoke when i started it like always for about 15 secocnds we got about 10 inches of snow the night before and my truck is covered in ice/snow really bad but since then the temps have dropped. is there a way to know if the diesel is gelled cuz i dont have any addatives in it
The white smoke in your no start condition would be unburnt fuel so I think fuel should be OK but you can pull the fuel filter and check there. It sounds like your blockheater cord or element might be bad not to start when plugged in and when it did start when plugged in you said it smoked.
yes it smoked when it was plugged in still. i think that i m having problems with my block heater due to the fact that there is sometimes ice on the plug or in the plug of the extension cord that i am useing would that effect the heater even though it is grounded??
About 1min after you plug in the block heater, you should hear a little sizzle coming from right above the oil filter. If it is dead silent, then you need to pull the connection at the BLOCK and spay some electrical connector cleaner in there. I had to do that on a 1997 that I had, worked fine after that.
You can check the block heater resistance with a ohm meter.. should be around 19 ohms.. be sure to clean the plug lugs first.. they get pretty dirty...
well everytime i plug in my truck it blows the breaker in my house and it just recently started doing this if i was to check it with an ohm meter where do i test it at and how do i do it? could there maybe be a blown fuse and i is jst sending direct current into the extension cord?
